The $Windows.~BT folder is around 705MB in size, it coatins subfolders "boot" "DUdownload" "efi" "NewOS" "Sources" "Store" "support" and "Work", within it it has the files autorun.inf, bootmgr, bootmgr.efi, MediaMeta.xml and setup.exe. I upgraded from 8 to 8.1 a few days ago on that machine, so that must be why the windows.old folder is about.
#KB2976978 IS NOT INSTALLED ZIP FILE#
Just one other thing I thought I should mention, I have a $Windows.~BT folder and a Windows.old folder on my C:\ drive, might either of them be able to help me? Might they hold old originals that could overwrite system file changes made by KB2976978?Īlso I have heard about a $Windows.~BT folder being involved in the transition from 8.1 to 10, does the presence of ths folder mean gwx was able to do it's evil work in the short time KB3035583, KB3044374, KB3013816, KB3046480 and KB3065988 were on my system (those five updates all appeard when I upgraded 8 to 8.1 but I uninstalled each within hours and then cut the remnnts of gwx from within WinSxS and put them in a zip file within a personal folder, behind a few layers of renaming), or is it simply a matter of any upgrade from one windows version to another always makes a $Windows.~BT folder? Is there anything I should check for the presence of to make sure this $Windows.~BT folder is not to do with windows 10?
#KB2976978 IS NOT INSTALLED UPDATE#
Uninstalling the update would require rolling back these changes to the old format - a very significant coding undertaking Microsoft chose not to spend time on. Slight tweaks are made, new keys added, data formats changed, and oftentimes the old keys updated to the new format. Why? Because they often retrospectively slightly change (or in the case of some of the Windows Vista servicing stack updates, very significantly change) the structure of the Components Hive. The most common examples are the Servicing Stack updates, and in general all updates for Windows Update. So this isn't a question of prerequisites or postrequisites and uninstalling in order, it's just a simple fact that this update cannot ever be uninstalled once installed. This is not determined on the fly - it's a static property of the update itself. Here's what I've been explained by niemiro, a Windows Update Expert on Sysnative (and the Creator of SFCFix):Ĭertain updates simply cannot be uninstalled.
